HypnoBirthing at Curtin University!

I recently had the pleasure of being invited as a guest speaker to present the benefits of HypnoBirthing to the third year midwifery students at Curtin University.

I began the talk by introducing them to what Hynposis is and how it can benefit their parents during labour. I was asked a great question about how stage hypnosis worked and was able to de-bunk some of the prevelant mis-conceptions about hypnotherapy.

Once they all understood that their mind was not able to be 'controlled' by me, I guided them all into their first experience of group hypnosis. Giving them the opportunity to experience first hand the mind body connection. This lead to a discussion on the science behind how hypnotherapy works and why it is so important in birthing.

We talked about how the body responds to fear & stress and how it responds when the labouring mother is calm & relaxed, this is achieved by teaching and then using self-hypnosis and guided meditation as well as other life enhancing skills.

The research and statitics of years of clinical trials then demonstrated our results. This of course was of great interest to the students.

I then shared with them the benefits of working within the 5 week framework and how the skills are developed and practiced at home and in class.

HypnoBirthing has now made it's way into the minds and hearts of those who attended. It is changing the way we give birth and now thanks to the open minds of this class - creating new opportunities for working in colaboration with medical staff, parents and us!
